DOES YOUR CHILD NEED HELP?

Thinking about Depression….

As some of you may recall my young adult has suffered from depression since they were in middle school. The diagnosis is "Major Depressive Disorder." Despite being on medication, going to therapy, and other supportive services, it never goes away. It's like a thick fog that barely dissipates.

Depression is getting a lot of attention these days. The other day, I was surprised to see a greeting card for people dealing with it at my CVS.

A friend sent me a recent NBC story about how the condition is more common in boys and young men than it used to be. It's no longer more prevalent in adolescent girls. Read the story

And there's more and more evidence that social media is to blame for the increase in depression and other mental health conditions. An excellent NYTimes Podcast featuring NYU's social psychologist Jonathan Haidt discusses the latest findings. If you're an NYTimes digital subscriber, you can read the article here.

The good news is that the increased attention has people talking more openly about depression. And hopefully, that's helping to lessen the stigma attached to mental health.

New! Book Club
with Parent Coach Sarah MacKay Lynch

There are so many good books out there on mental health. But do you feel like you don't have enough time to read and really absorb them? What if you were in a discussion group with other parents who had an older teen or young adult with similar mental health issues? Well, our parent coach has started a book group. It will meet regularly on Zoom.
